What to Do When Holiday Cookies Damage Your Teeth
One of the most enjoyable parts of the holiday season is sampling all of the different varieties of baked treats. Whether you enjoy cookies from a bakery or the cookies that people in your workplace bring in to the office break room, you do not expect that eating one will cause you to experience an injury. If you bite into a cookie and experience a chipped, cracked or broken tooth, injury attorneys may be able to represent you.
Save a Sample
If possible, put the rest of the cookie into a food storage bag or bowl with a lid on it. Take a photo of the part of the cookie that damaged your tooth. This is especially important if there was an unexpected hard object inside of the cookie, such as a piece of eggshell, a nut or a piece of hard candy.
Find Out Who Made the Cookies
Try to find out who made the cookies that broke your tooth. If the cookies were made at a bakery, get the name of the bakery and the type of the cookie. You may need this information if you work with an attorney to make a claim against the individual or bakery that produced the cookie.
Get Documentation from the Dentist
A chipped or broken tooth requires evaluation by a dentist, oral surgeon or endodontist. Obtain the dentist’s findings in writing. If the dentist takes X-rays of your oral injuries, obtain a copy of them. If you seek a second opinion, get that in writing, too. Once you have decided on a treatment plan, keep all of the documentation from your bills. Dental implants and crowns are costly, and you may be able to file claims.
