Handling a Car Crash When the Other Driver Flees
A car accident can be a scary event to experience. However, it gets even worse if the other driver leaves the scene of the crash. The good news is that there are many tools that the authorities have to find that person. In some cases, the driver will come back to the scene on his or her own. What should you do between the time a crash occurs and the other driver is located?
Call the Police
Regardless of why an accident occurred, the first step that you should take is to call the police. If anyone is hurt, it may be best to call 911 and ask that emergency personnel come to the scene. When the police arrive, they will be able to take your statement and collect other evidence that may be useful during their investigation. If they have not been called already, a police officer can call for an ambulance or fire rescue professionals.
File an Insurance Claim
File an insurance claim as quickly as possible after the accident. Doing so will make it easier to collect compensation whether or not the other driver is found. Your insurance agent will be able to help you determine how to file it and learn if the insurance company will try to help you find the person who caused the accident. Generally, your comprehensive coverage is used to reimburse you for costs related to a hit-and-run crash.
Attorneys May Represent Your Interests
Whether or not the other driver is found, a personal injury lawyer may be helpful in representing your interests in a car accident case. Having an attorney on your team may make it less likely that your insurance company will offer a settlement that is less than what you could be entitled to or deny it altogether.
